Abstract
Materiality has always been the frame of reference of literature, and literary concept changes along with the innovations in the relationship between the material and the man. In recent decades, theorists and critics began to interpret the materiality of literary texts in the trialectics of material-sign-spirit, which highlights a critical space of the poetics of materiality. Being regarded as one of the potential trends in 21st century, such a poetics is a fusion of series of contemporary critical inquiries. This paper investigates the contexts of the 20th century literary critical practices, clarifies the successions of semiotic materiality of text, the social materiality of intertext and the historical materiality of hypertext. Based on it, the critical inquiries and theoretical functions of the material poetics are evaluated and reflected.
