Abstract
The Chinese society confronted unprecedented changes in the late Qing and early Republican periods. Maintaining “elegant people's deep sense of beauty” in the upheaval was the purpose of Shen Zengzhi, a poet of the “Tongguang Style”. His theory of “three passes” and “elegance” were not only the creative orientation of the “Song Poetry School”, but also the expression of the author's sense of personality, path of learning and cultural accomplishment. These elements were fully demonstrated in Shen's literature on painting and calligraphy, which saw Dao, the cultural spirit of a nation, through art. As “elegant people's deep sense of beauty” that reflected the author's mind, temperament and demeanor, Shen's inscriptions on painting and calligraphy contained the emotions after the vicissitudes of life and the cultural adherence to Dao during calamities.
