Abstract

The modern understanding of the concept of tang chuanqi (literally, transmission of the strange in the Tang Dynasty) is the result of its evolution in the modern times. Except for Lu Xun's influence, the changing understanding of the concept involves at least three important factors: the theoretical foundation of the classical meaning of the concept, the globalized literary ecology, and the academic mechanism of local thought. This study tries to delineate the meaning evolution of the concept chuanqi from the perspectives of the terminology translation in the Late Qing and the Republic period. Lu Xun's A Brief History of Chinese Fiction should be contextualized along with the Japanese translation of chuanqi into romance and Chinese equivalization of the spirit of Tang-Dynasty tales to Romanticism at that time. It is the combined effects from both the borrowing of Western conceptual understanding and the delving into traditional Chinese criticism that constructed the contemporary understanding of the concept Tang-Dynasty chuanqi.
