Abstract

Since the late 1990s, Chinese scholars have deliberated on the issue of the establishment of a Chinese cultural subjectivity and identity for a nation rising in the international arena. Zhang Xudong’s theoretical work Cultural Identity in the Era of Globalization, published in the year 2005, sparked heated debate within intellectual circles, and continued its broad influence till now. This article aims to bring Zhang’s thesis and its opponents’ opinions together, to examine their concerns and respective methodologies and shed lights on their merits and faults.
