Abstract
The newly discovered Poetic Remarks from the Xiaoshemo Studio written by Wang Pijiang, originally published in 1915, may be his earliest work on poetics. It not only provides clues to distinguish the errors in Wang’s poems and writing, but also discusses important propositions such as the periodization of poetry history and the geographical division of poetry genres, reflecting that several major concepts of modern poetics research have taken shape in Wang’s youth. Also collected in this book are his poems presented to Chen Sanli, and these poems are a complete group of the poems in another of his books Remarks on Famous Poets during the Guangxu and Xuantong Periods in the Qing Dynasty. This complete group can illuminate the reasons behind his high praise for Chen Sanli, and help to deepen our understanding of the poetry world of the late Qing dynasty and Wang Pijiang’s system of poetics.
