Abstract
It has been proposed since the early 20th century that the Tongchang School in the Qing Dynasty was a literary school of both prose and poetry, but the Tongcheng School's theoretical claims of poetry has not been given due explorations. This paper approaches Tongcheng School's poetic theory from an analysis of Yao Nai's (1731-1815) literary ideas and proceeds to examine how he developed his poetics upon Wang Shizhen (1634-1711). Then, the paper analyzes the poetic taste in New Style Poems and its illuminations to the poetics of Tongcheng School before concluding the paper with Yao Nai's theoretical and academic contribution as a founder of Tongcheng poetry.
