Abstract
Two modes of aesthetic analogy developed in The Book of Poetry and Li Sao are "analogy between human virtues and things" and "analogy between human beings and things." These two modes are similar in their tenors and vehicles, and share the same structure, and they are built on the analogy between the beauty of character and the beauty of nature. The aesthetic thought exhibits an unification between the heaven and the human being. However, the paper argues that the two modes essentially follow two different princiles in aesthetics with different cultural spirits. The analogy betwen virtues and things is a moral analogy in natural aesthetic, with an aesthetical spirit of moralism underlying it, while the analogy between human beings and things is a natural analogy in character aesthetic, with an aesthetical spirit of naturalism underlying it.
