Abstract
The paper reiterates the necessity of reflecting on the differences of literary ideas between China and the West. In classical Chinese literary theory, literature prioritizes lyricalism, and the essence of this literary idea is to express the ethos of individual and the society. Literary ideas in the West centering round Europe chooses to prioritize mimesis, and a literature developed along this idea sees itself as a vehicle for knowledge. The paper attributes the differences over literary ideas, themes and literary spirit between China and the West to the differences between Chinese humanistic sprit and Western humanism, between Chinese agricultural civilization and Western oceanic civilization, and between Chinese practical-mindedness and Western scientific-mindedness.
